- Boot.wim, esta imagen como su nombre indica contiene el arranque, o para hacerlo más entendible, contiene el asistente que nos guía durante la instalación y las aplicaciones necesarias para esta.
- Install.wim, contiene las imágenes del sistema operativo, serán las que se aplicaran durante el proceso de instalación.
Ambas imágenes podemos encontrarlas en los medios de instalación en la carpeta sources del directorio raíz.Durante un momento de la instalación se nos pregunta que versión de Windows deseamos instalar, esto hace referencia al almacenamiento de varias imágenes en un mismo archivo, es decir dentro de install.wim están las imágenes de todas las versiones del sistema Home, Enterprise, Ultimate, etcétera y simplemente se nos está preguntando cuál de ellas deseamos implementar en nuestro equipo.
- El archivo WIM también posibilita la compresión y creación de instancias únicas, esto quizás puede resultar un poco más complicado de entender, podríamos resumirlo en “para que voy a almacenar más de una vez el mismo archivo en el mismo lugar”. Como vimos en el punto anterior la imagen install.wim contiene todas las versiones del sistema operativo, teniendo en cuenta el tamaño de la imagen de instalación de cada versión, ¿Cómo es posible que entren todas en un espacio reducido? Esto era muy tangible en Windows Vista, en un DVD teníamos las 6 versiones disponibles de este. Eso es gracias a esta característica de las imágenes WIM, si nos fijamos en las diferentes versiones de Windows, estas varían unas de otras en una serie de características, estas se van añadiendo según la versión elegida, pero el núcleo del sistema es el mismo para todas las versiones, así que, por que almacenar ese núcleo 6 veces (en el caso de Windows Vista). Y eso es lo que hacen las imágenes WIM, explicado de manera entendible, almacenan los archivos comunes a dos o más imágenes una sola vez, eliminando la duplicidad innecesaria de archivos, con su consiguiente reducción de espacio necesario para el almacenamiento de las imágenes. Luego sencillamente cuando seleccionamos nuestra versión de Windows deseada la instalación aplicara el contenido común a todas las imágenes, más la parte diferencial que corresponde a la edición de Windows seleccionada.
- Tratamiento de imágenes Off-line, podemos agregar y eliminar componentes del sistema, revisiones y controladores sin necesidad de crear una nueva imagen. No es necesario generar una imagen nueva, haciendo uso de herramientas como DISM e ImageX, podemos modificar las imágenes.
- El formato de imagen WIM permite instalar una imagen de disco en particiones de cualquier tamaño, a diferencia de los formatos de imagen basados en sectores, que requieren que se implemente una imagen de disco en una partición que sea del mismo tamaño o mayor que el disco de origen.
- Implementación no destructiva, cuando instalamos en una partición que contiene datos estos no serán borrados. Por ejemplo, si necesitamos reinstalar Windows, los datos que contenía la partición del sistema anteriormente serán movidos a la raíz, dentro de una carpeta llamada Windows.old, obviamente las aplicaciones deberán ser reinstaladas, pero nuestros datos estarán a salvo.
Posteriormente veremos el tratamiento de este tipo de imágenes con las herramientas antes mencionadas entre otras, así como la implementación de estas.
